Education and the Internet. Some Resources for Everyone.

The internet is a boon for anyone who wants to read up or learn about, well, pretty much anything. It’s easy to get distracted by the latest cute cat or gossip, but if you ever feel like digging your head into something deeper, have a look here. These are a few sites I’ve stumbled across which people may find of interest

OpenCourseWare: Free courses online from MIT. Also, the opencourseconsortium. Or free downloads and podcasts of other courses. More lectures from more universities (Yale, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon…)

Academic Earth: Free video lectures from the world’s top scholars.

Google’s Code University: Learn how to program in various codes for free.

Google Scholar: Search many academic papers.

SmartHistory for your art historians out there.

The top 9 1/2 books on a hacker’s bookshelf

Course Hero: Study guides, syllabi, and much more for many universities.

The American Scholar: The magazine of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Some interesting articles.

Wi-Fi Finder: Find wi-fi anywhere to access the internet. This has an extensive list of free wi-fi hotspots. An intellectual blog with some interesting (but thick) articles.

64 Things Every Geek Should Know

Fravia: A wonderful educational resource and blog.

Know of any others?

W3Schools is a great place to learn various programming languages for free.

TED (the Technology, Entertainment, and Design conference) offers videos of its fabulous 20-minute lectures & performances free online.

PBS and NPR both have ridiculous amounts of free content, mostly educational and mostly available online.

Wikipedia is a great starting point for most inquisitive escapades. Not to be overlooked.

The blogosphere itself. Following a blog on a topic of interest is one of the best ways to learn the ins and outs of that topic. Google searches for “(your topic here) blogs” will probably lead you in the right direction.
